Y2K Fashion Is Making A Comeback, So I Ranked 23 Of The Most Iconic ’00s Trends From Worst To Best

There is no good reason why we need to subject ourselves to low-rise jeans again.

23.

Slogan tees/singlets

Supré

I love a good slogan tee, but the 2000s had some of the weirdest and downright random designs. Like, they were really slapping any phrase on a t-shirt and we LAPPED IT UP. Never again.

22.

Over-plucked eyebrows

Theo Wargo / WireImage

Look, fair enough if you’ve been born with thin eyebrows, but the thought of plucking my thick Indian brows to the point where they resemble pencilled lines has me shaking. Do it if you want, but do not let these become a trend again — my thick brows and I are thriving.

21.

Ties

KMazur / WireImage

You know what’s not complicated, Avril? Choosing not to add random ties to your outfits. They look out of place otherwise — like you’ve gone to your parents’ house, rummaged through your old boxes of clothing, found your school tie and chucked it on.

20.

Wearing skirts over jeans

Barry King / WireImage

You can’t tell me there’s a single person who rocked this trend during the ’00s and doesn’t find it cringe today. At the time, it was cute because we were kids, but grown adults have no business layering skirts on top of jeans like that.

Low-rise jeans

I am truly aghast that the TikTok girlies are already bringing this one back and that celebrities are following suit. This is no reason why we need to subject ourselves to jeans that cut off right above our underwear, have barely-there zippers and expose our backsides. Power to you if that’s the ‘fit you enjoy wearing, but me and my high-waisted jeans that go right up to my belly button are very comfortable, thanks.

18.

Leather wrap belts

discountshoponline.com.au

I am guilty of owning one of these oh-so-cool faux leather wrap belts as a kid — in fact, I think it was part of my first ever Supré purchase. Ah, sweet memories, but I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing one of these now.

17.

Fluro coloured clothing

Supré

Once again, I am stunned that this is something we rocked during the ’00s and considered the height of fashion. Why were we obsessed with fluro? Who knows, but it’s behind us now, right? (RIGHT?!)

16.

Uggs

Jon Kopaloff / FilmMagic, Amy Graves / WireImage

I never got the whole obsession with uggs and having your jeans tucked into them — or worse, paired with a skirt in the dead of winter and insisting that you’re not cold (even though you are). At least wear something cute if you’re going to freeze.

15.

Trackies that were intentionally super long, meaning they would become gross and ratty

Supré

Grimy, dirty and ragged trackies? It was a hard pass for me then and it’s a hard pass for me now.

14.

Shrugs

ebay.co.uk, walmart.com

I get using a sheer one at the beach as a cover-up, but like, these were kinda useless at keeping you warm and looked ugly. We don’t need shrugs in 2022.

13.

Trucker hats

Roxy, Stephen Lovekin / FilmMagic

There’s nothing wrong with wearing a hat, but we just used to pair them with any and every outfit — that was the real crime. Like, if only someone had told Lindsay Lohan that she didn’t need to wear a cap saying “drama queen” to a red carpet event.

12.

Country Road duffle bags

ebay.com

These were such a status symbol in high school, but I’m very glad I wasn’t able to afford one because they were TERRIBLE for the shoulders. That didn’t stop the popular girls from stuffing them full of textbooks and lugging them all the way home. They’re cute bags, but we really did idolise them for no reason during the ’00s.

11.

Vests

Bryan Bedder / Getty Images

A tailored vest can actually be the hottest thing ever, but back in the ’00s we just styled them horrendously with t-shirts underneath and clashing patterns. Give me a black satin leather vest that fits well and ooooooft, I’ll post thirst trap after thirst trap with that.

10.

Ballet flats

Keds, Jon Kopaloff / FilmMagic

Was Mischa Barton’s Keds campaign featuring cherry ballet flats a huge part of your tween years or were you normal? Ballet flats were a ’00s staple and for good reason — they were cute, easy to slip on and relatively comfortable. At the same time, they offered zero support for your feet and made them sweat a bunch. So, idk if they deserve a comeback.

9.

Coloured skinny jeans

Supré, Flickr: karen_roe

Were you even a Jay Jays kid if you didn’t wear coloured skinny jeans? I vividly remember donning a maroon and forest green pair and you know what — they were cute and I wouldn’t say no to wearing them again if I still had them. The brighter colours though — like the pinks and reds — can stay in the ’00s.

8.

Baguette bags

Shein, HBO

Honestly, I didn’t even know these were a ’00s trend, but according to my research, Carrie Bradshaw herself popularised them in Sex And The City. I’m all for baguette bags making a comeback though as they’re a stylish and minimalistic combo that I love adding to all my outfits (and they’re big enough to put all of your essentials in there!).

7.

Y2K sunglasses

Denny Keeler / Getty Images, Gregg Deguire / WireImage

Whether they’re tiny, tinted or oversized, the ’00s really had some of the best sunglasses styles to choose from, so yes, they absolutely should make a comeback. They’re fun, add a pop of colour to your outfit and feel nostalgic, yet new at the same time.

6.

Butterfly clips

TiggyCustard / Etsy / Via etsy.com, @lizzobeeating / Via instagram.com

I bought some butterfly clips earlier this year and oh my god, I am never letting them go. They’re beyond adorable and can be styled in SO many ways. Add some to your space buns, clip a few in your hair, do a whole ethereal Lizzo moment — the world is your oyster (well, butterfly in this case).

5.

Denim skirts

themarket.com, John Sciulli / WireImage

I wasn’t aware that denim skirts had gone out of fashion, but they supposedly did?! That’s absolute nonsense to me. Denim skirts have always been a solid outfit staple, whether your aesthetic is preppy, street or something else.

4.

Halter tops

I’m yet to find the perfect halter top to support my girlies (and when I do, it’s over for you all), but I’m obsessed with how so many people are pairing them with some baggy, high-waisted jeans. Like denim skirts, halter tops will be a forever staple in my book.

3.

Cargo pants

Blackmilk Clothing, Gregg Deguire / WireImage

Love them or hate them, cargo pants are back and I, for one, am extremely happy about this. I’ll admit that ’00s cargo pants (and, shivers, SHORTS) were not it — they often came in camo and were deeply unflattering, but the ones going around now are ultra comfy and come with so many damn useful pockets.

2.

Sheer mesh tops

Disney, ASOS

Even if sheer mesh tops somehow go out of fashion again, I will proudly wear them. I love that they offer me the option of covering up, but still having lots of spice to my outfit. Plus, they’re such a good layering piece. I am team sheer mesh top until the day I die.

1.

And lastly, corset tops

Kevin Winter / Getty Images, @barbieferreira / Via instagram.com

From Victoria Beckham rocking one in the ’00s to Barbie Ferreira doing the same but 20 years later, corset tops are timeless (especially considering they originate from ye olde times) and so flattering. Unlike other Y2K trends making a comeback (hello, low-rise jeans), I feel like corsets look great on any body type — and that’s why they’re my favourite ’00s trend to make a comeback.

Alright, now it’s your turn! Tell me which ’00s fashion trends you think should stay in the past and which should make a comeback.
