The last time a TV series about basketball took us by storm, it was April 2020, and The Last Dance was airing on ESPN. HBO’s Winning Time, produced by Adam McKay, is the biggest show about basketball since The Last Dance, and comes at a much different time at sports. While we still don’t have any baseball happening—due to a totally avoidable lockout, thanks to the stubborn and selfish MLB owners—the NBA is in full swing and thriving. But with the Lakers, and their leader, superstar LeBron James, struggling, it’s the perfect time to look at the story Winning Time tells: when owner Jerry Buss first bought the team, drafted Magic Johnson, and changed the culture of one of the league’s most popular teams.
The cast of Winning Time is 100% stacked, and right at the center of it is an actor it’s almost impossible to dislike: John C. Reilly, who plays Buss. Reilly has worked with McKay before, of course—he starred in both Talladega Nights and Step Brothers—and his personable charm and endless charisma are a perfect fit to play the person who made the Lakers into what they would eventually become: a perpetual winner.

But Winning Time shows that it wasn’t all roses. Behind the scenes, there was drama, turmoil, and some damn entertaining chaos—all of which unfolds within the show. And Reilly isn’t the only member of the cast you’ve heard of, either: Sally Field, Jason Segel, Adrien Brody, Jason Clarke, Gaby Hoffmann, Rob Morgan, and Michael Chiklis are just some of the familiar names and faces playing roles in the show. And McKay, who also produces Succession—one of HBO’s biggest hits—wants to keep his own winning streak on the prestige cable giant going strong.
