Threads off to a flying start as Zuckerberg posts first tweet in 11 years

The highly anticipated and potential Twitter-killer has landed and millions have already downloaded it, according to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Threads, built by Meta’s Instagram team, went live on Wednesday evening and in just the first four hours received an impressive five million sign-ups, Zuckerberg said in a post on the new text-based app.

Clearly enjoying the occasion, Zuckerberg also teased Twitter owner Elon Musk by posting his first tweet in more than a decade containing the classic spiderman-pointing-at-spiderman meme. It seems to be a reference to the striking and deliberate similarities between Threads and Twitter, or perhaps a cheeky reminder about the potential cage fight between the two.

The Meta chief already has 250,000 followers on Threads, almost half of what he has on Twitter. But whereas it might be another decade before he tweets again, it seems likely he’ll be very active on Threads.

“The vision for Threads is to create an open and friendly public space for conversation,” Zuckerberg said in another of his posts on the new app. “We hope to take what Instagram does best and create a new experience around text, ideas, and discussing what’s on your mind.” It seems like they want to take what Twitter does — or did — best, too.

Interest in Threads is through the roof largely because a good many Twitter users are crying out for an alternative microblogging app following the disruptions that have plagued the social media platform since Elon Musk acquired the company in October.

Some observers believe that unless Twitter gets its act together sharpish, it could be curtains for the platform. Others think that it’s already too late. Threads’ arrival certainly hasn’t helped, though of course it’s early days for the new competitor.

At the current time, you log into Threads via your Instagram account, and posts can be up to 500 characters long and contain links, photos, and videos up to five minutes in length.

Twitter’s threaded tweets keep tweetstorms from clogging your feed

twitters new rules are here after womenboycotttwitter

Twitter is turning another user idea into a permanent feature as the “tweetstorm” becomes a built-in feature called threads. While users have been manually creating their own tweet threads for years, Twitter is now building the feature into the app, no manual replies or numbered posts required. The new threaded tweets feature will be rolling out to both the app and desktop versions over the next few weeks, Twitter announced on Tuesday, December 12.

Users already post hundreds of thousands of threads a day, Twitter says, but the new feature simplifies the task. Now, inside the options for composing a new tweet, users can tap the plus icon to add another tweet to the series. Once finished composing the series, hitting “tweet all” will post the entire series at once.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg just shared a lengthy post that reads like a mission statement for his platform. The 6,000-word post covers everything from fake news to civic engagement, as well as how Facebook can play a role in fixing these — and other –global issues.

Whereas much of the information in the note isn’t exactly new — Zuckerberg touts Facebook’s safety check and emergency relief tools as helping to make the world safer — it does offer an insight into the company’s developments on the fake news front.

Mark Zuckerberg quietly announces a massive increase in Instagram’s user numbers

instagram 400 million daily users zuck

Instagram now has 400 million daily active users. The photo-sharing app’s unabated growth has seen it add an extra 100 million new daily users to its already impressive tally in just over seven months.

The new data was casually dropped by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg during his company’s fourth-quarter earnings call on Wednesday. Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion in 2012 when it had a mere 30 million registered iOS users and had just launched on Android. By February 2013, the app reached its first major milestone of 100 million monthly active users.
