Report: ‘Halo Infinite’ Might Be Getting That Battle Royale Mode After All

Halo Infinite

A new revelation from the well-sourced Windows Central reporter, Jez Corden, seems to indicate that the new mode being worked on by Certain Affinity for Halo Infinite is in fact some variation of a battle royale.

In a recent interview, Corden had the following to say about the mode, codenamed Tatanka, a wrestler whose career highlight was…winning a 40-man battle royale in the WWF.

  • The mode being developed by Certain Affinity is a battle royale, though how “traditional” a battle royale remains unclear. This is specifically Certain Affinity’s project while 343 will continue work on the normal multiplayer and future single player content.
  • It has been in development for over two years.
  • It is supposed to be on the scale of Warzone, aka potentially an entirely separate side-game.
  • It is targeting the Fortnite/Warzone/Apex crowd and meant to bring new players into Halo.
  • Release is targeting season 3 or 4 of Infinite.
  • It ties into the upcoming Forge mode somehow.

There are also indications that this will be a “Halo” spin on a battle royale as in, it will be more than just picking up guns and killing rival Spartans until you’re the last one standing. Players have datamined a massive list of objective callouts that seem to indicate there may be a lot more going on all over the map that just firefights between players, and Corden say that he does believe that it will be “unique twist” on the battle royale concept. I’m wondering if there may actually be AI enemies on the map as well for this, Covenant and such, but there doesn’t seem to be any confirmation of that one way or the other.

Halo has been criticized by some players and praised by others for not including a battle royale at launch, which would have made it both more relevant in the current shooter landscape, but also perhaps looked like trend chasing. But if this timeline is correct, and this has been in development for two years, it appears that late in the game, pretty close to what was supposed to be its original 2020 release date, the decision was made to pursue this mode.

This is also the realization of Halo Infinite being a “platform” if it can be used to produce a separate spin-off game like this. If they are indeed following a Warzone track, this is probably going to be free, and probably a separate download that the campaign or multiplayer that can exist as standalone content.

Personally, I think this is exciting and exactly the kind of thing Halo needs to inject some life into Infinite moving forward. If it’s targeting season 3 or 4, that should mean maybe August or November, barring any delays, but hopefully before the end of this year. We’ll have to see.

Fans will keep datamining and we’ll see if any other info emerges. But for now, yes, something big does appear to be coming.
