Legendary powerlifter Blaine Sumner has broken multiple records on the world’s biggest stages and competed against the best bodybuilders in the business. In a recent interview with Men’s Health MVP, the 400-pound Colorado native shared his journey in the weight room and why he chooses to drink protein “chicken shakes” to stay fueled.

For a powerlifter of Sumner’s size, consistently consuming large numbers of calories is one of the hardest parts of the job, and chewing through 10,000+ calories a day can get old quick. That’s why he decided to get his macros in through high-protein shakes containing chicken and other meat.

“I get asked about my chicken shakes on social media more than I do about training. It’s how I’ve fueled my body for 10 years now,” Sumner said. “My diet is almost exclusively chicken shakes, and that’s just the easiest way to get the calories in for me. I don’t have the appetite to eat and chew enough to be 400 pounds.”

He also added some advice for regular gym-goers who are struggling to build and keep mass.

“Just make sure you’re taking enough protein, carbs, and fat throughout the entire day, especially before and after the workouts. Those may be the most important meals for powerlifting,” Sumner added. “I look at food as fuel and nothing else. I know others need to enjoy it, and if you have ways to do that, great.”
