When wide-leg pants became a popular fashion item worn by everyone from Blake Lively to Kendall Jenner, I was skeptical. Adding volume to my lower half wasn’t something I was eager to do. But after seeing wide-leg styles everywhere on runways and in fashion ad campaigns—and remembering Katharine Hepburn’s timelessly chic sensibility—I caved and tried a pair. It didn’t take long for me to jump on the wide-leg bandwagon because I found them surprisingly flattering, comfortable and effortless to dress up or down.

Me+Em’s quality fabrics, impeccable construction and polished style make them a coveted wardrobe … [+] staple.

My go-to brand for wide-leg pants: Me+Em. The London-based retailer’s selection of voluminous pants is the biggest I’ve seen, and they offer impeccable tailoring. The fabrics come is so many colors, textures and patterns, making them great for all seasons and levels of formality. I own three pairs, and I’ve gotten endless fashion mileage of them because they highlight my waist and elongate my legs.

Below are some of my favorite Me+Em styles right now that I’ve been wearing for everything from work meetings to summer parties to travel.

Editor’s Picks: The Best Me+Em Wide-Leg Pants

Me+Em Linen Blend Pleated Wide-Leg Pant

Cut from a linen cotton blend, this breathable fabric is ideal for keeping you cool in warm seasons. The high waisted style can be worn with a belt or without, subtle pleating lays flat and adds length to your leg, and the drape gives an effortless flow as you walk.

Me+Em Chambray Tailoring Super Wide-Leg Pant

Think of this as a pant that can be worn everywhere from summer cocktails to the office. The high waisted, ultra-wide-leg style—which has a skinny removable belt detail—is best paired with a fitted top to help accentuate your waist. Wear these with flat sandals or fashion sneakers for a chic-yet-comfortable look.

Me+Em Cotton Herringbone Wide-Leg Pant

This ecru pant gives subtle sailor pant vibes, but they’re also sleek and office appropriate. The cotton-wool blend has a herringbone weave, and it has a structured appearance that’s more polished than slouchy. Dark buttons add visual interest and make these the slightest bit dressier.

Modal jersey makes these both soft and stretchy, which means these pants are perfect for travel or just day-to-day comfort. The roll-top waistband means you can roll the waist up or down to alter the length of the pant, and the cropped style is ideal for showing off cute sneakers or flats.

With colors like “spring green” and “electric pink,” this pant screams fun and stylish. This polyester-viscose blend has heft, but it’s also flowy and cool so you won’t overheat. Each color comes with a matching blazer, too.

Are Wide Leg Pants Comfortable?

Yes. Part of the beauty of wide-leg pants is that you’re not restricted by a close-fitting silhouette in the hip, thigh and leg. These pants should in no way be clingy. Be careful, though, to buy them so that they fit at the waist—not too tight and not too loose—as they will look best if they’re highlighting your natural waist. I like to be able to fit two fingers between my skin and the waistband of the pant so they’re fitted, but not uncomfortable when I sit.

How Should Wide Leg Pants Fit?

Wide-leg pants should be roomy—think of them as the opposite of skinny jeans. They should fit at and accentuate your waist, but not cling to your lower half anywhere else. Many wide-leg pant styles have lay-flat pleats that allow for more fabric throughout the leg without adding excess bulk around the hips, and they also help give the illusion of a longer leg. In terms of length, it sort of depends on which wide-leg style you’re wearing. Some palazzo styles are cropped and other wide-leg styles may have a slight break at the bottom or some puddling at the hem, depending on your preference. Many of Me+Em’s pants have extra depth at the hem, so they can be altered to your desired length.

How Do I Style Wide Leg Pants?

In general, wide-leg pants look great worn with fitted tops to balance out the volume on the bottom. I prefer wearing them with either a fitted tee, cropped style top, button down shirt that’s knotted at the waist or a body-hugging tank that’s tucked in. But wide-leg pants also look great with vests on top (another huge trend), styled with blazers, or with any shirt that’s loosely tucked or half tucked to show off your belt or waistline. As for shoes, you can wear wide-leg pants with heels, flats or sneakers. In the interest of comfort, I like to wear my Me+Em pants with a fashion sneaker like Adidas Samba Classic Sneakers or Adidas Gazelles.
