Last Week, the Best Dressed Stars Wanted Fashion Out of Left Field

When in doubt, mix things up. Stars might have their fashion signatures and tried-and-true outfit formulas, but consistency will only take you so far. Change—be it a gradual progression or a complete 180—is what makes celebrity fashion interesting, after all. And this week, performers seemed intent on testing the waters.

Surprisingly, former teen idol Miranda Cosgrove led the charge by making a stylish return to her old stomping ground. By turning the red carpet at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards into a runway (with a little help from her spangly tangerine Celia Kritharioti mini-dress) Cosgrove banished all thoughts of her iCarly alter-ego.

The Balenciaga phase of Kim Kardashian’s style has been more than intriguing, but the reality television queen still knows how to keep her audience on its toes. For the premiere of her family’s new series on Hulu, Kardashian left the Demna designs at home for an evening and mixed things up in custom Thierry Mugler, wearing a gown made exclusively for her before the designer’s passing in January. While the skintight silver dress adhered to her shiny fashion philosophy, its curve-hugging silhouette and built-in underwire bra made a distinctive and appealing change of pace.

All eyes may have been on the Valentino couture-clad bride at Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz’s Palm Beach nuptials, but Victoria Beckham was difficult to ignore. The designer brings her legendary style wherever she goes, so it makes sense that her mother-of-the-groom ensemble was a cut above the rest. Dressed in a shimmering riff on her slip dress gowns, Beckham looked a million bucks. The liquid metal fabrication added a new verve to a style that has become a constant on Beckham’s runways—her pre-fall 2022 featured a neon version of the same piece—and a favorite within her own wardrobe.

The week’s biggest thrill, however, came courtesy of a newcomer; namely, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore star Jessica Williams. The Daily Show and 2 Dope Queens alum dazzled at the Chinese premiere of the wizarding franchise’s latest in high drama look from Marc Jacobs’s fall 2021 show. Jacobs’s work always stands out from the competition, but the sight of one of his boldest designs—a turquoise ribbed gown with billowing sleeves and built-in cape—worn with humor and grace by a rising star was a knock-out.
