India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has signed a working arrangement with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to strengthen bilateral cooperation on aviation safety under the framework of the Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement (BASA).

The agreement, signed on March 5, 2026, marks a significant step in deepening regulatory collaboration between India and the United States. It brings industry heavyweights, Boeing, GE Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney, into a structured framework aimed at improving coordination on aircraft and engine certification matters.

The new working arrangement supplements the existing Implementation Procedures for Airworthiness (IPA) between the DGCA and the FAA. It establishes a formal mechanism to streamline aircraft and engine type validation, as well as recognition and acceptance processes, in a transparent and time-bound manner.

Officials said the framework is designed to address certification and validation challenges more efficiently as India’s aviation market expands rapidly. By creating clearer processes and timelines, the arrangement is expected to reduce regulatory friction for manufacturers while maintaining stringent safety standards.

The collaboration is also seen as reinforcing India–US aviation ties at a time when Indian carriers continue to induct large fleets of US-manufactured aircraft and engines.

The DGCA said the initiative would further enhance safety, efficiency and regulatory coordination, supporting the continued growth of India’s aviation sector.
