Nvidia recently announced the Rubin CPX, an AI GPU with a monolithic die and 128 GB of GDDR7 memory. Many users were quick to speculate that the Rubin CPX could be the GPU inside the next-generation RTX 6090. Moore’s Law Is Dead has now issued an update regarding these speculations.

As we move closer to 2026, speculation about the next generation of desktop gaming GPUs is growing. We already know a ton of details about AMD’s upcoming RDNA 5 lineup and the included AT4, AT3, AT2, and AT0 GPUs. But, we haven’t heard much about Nvidia’s plans for the GeForce RTX 60 series. For some people, this changed earlier in September when Nvidia unveiled the Rubin CPX AI GPU.

Featuring a monolithic die with 128 GB of GDDR7 memory, the Rubin CPX is, according to Nvidia, meant “to deliver extremely high performance and energy efficiency for AI inference tasks”. More specifically, the Rubin CPX has been designed for “handle million-token coding and generative video applications”.

Interestingly, many people speculated online that the Rubin CPX die could be the one that Nvidia might use for the GeForce RTX 6090. On the surface, this is also hinted at by the official launch timing of Rubin CPX which is set for the end of 2026. Nvidia is reportedly unveiling the RTX 50 Super series GPU at CES 2026, which means that the next-generation RTX 60 series likely won’t be shown till the end of 2026.

Moore’s Law Is Dead has now tried to put the speculation that the Rubin CPX is the die at the heart of the RTX 6090 to rest. Citing one of his Nvidia sources, the leaker claims that the Rubin CPX is “highly specialized for Prefill/Inference”. The monolithic die allegedly even lacks a video out and, per MLID’s source, Nvidia has no plans to pair the GPU with a separate media die.

So, while it is possible that Nvidia could reconfigure Rubin CPX for the RTX 6090, the technical details shared and discussed by MLID in the video as to why Rubin CPX isn’t a likely candidate for the RTX 6090 sound convincing.
