Details about a OnePlus 12 engineering prototype have emerged online, courtesy of a renowned leaker. Purportedly, OnePlus is targeting camera upgrades for its next-generation flagship, as well as the adoption of Qualcomm’s future Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset.

Leaker Yogesh Brar has shared initial details about the OnePlus 12, likely the company’s next flagship smartphone. For reference, while OnePlus has released regular and Pro models in the past, it has no plans to offer a OnePlus 11 Pro. The same applies to the OnePlus 11T in the second half of 2023 owing to a flagship portfolio ‘streamlining’.

As such, the OnePlus 12 is likely to be the company’s first device with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, a chipset that Qualcomm has codenamed SM8650. Incidentally, while Qualcomm has not announced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 yet, early Genshin Impact benchmarks have leaked online alongside equivalents for the MediaTek Dimensity 9300. Brar adds that OnePlus will complement the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with a 5,000 mAh battery that supports 100 W wired charging, mirroring the non-US version of the current OnePlus 11.

Seemingly, OnePlus will also distinguish the OnePlus 11 and OnePlus 12 with improved cameras. According to the leaker, the company is developing the OnePlus 12 with 50 MP primary, 50 MP ultra-wide-angle (UWA) and 64 MP periscope cameras, with the latter two upgrades over the 48 MP UWA and 32 MP telephoto cameras in the OnePlus 11. Additionally, the OnePlus 12 is said to feature a 6.7-inch OLED display operating at QHD and 120 Hz. In other words, the OnePlus 12 is likely to match its predecessor in this regard, rather than moving onto a higher refresh rate like 144 Hz or 165 Hz.

Brar stresses that all specifications come from an engineering configuration. Hence, some details could change between now and when OnePlus begins mass production. Currently, the leaker asserts that OnePlus is targeting a December 2023 launch for the OnePlus 12; details of a global launch are unknown at this stage, although we would not be surprised if OnePlus continued offering new flagships globally in January.
