preview for House of the Dragon Episode 10 Trailer

House of the Dragon Season 1 is finally over. Unlike its predecessor Game of Thrones, viewers have been notably divided on the initial season. House of the Dragon had a slower, time-jumping pace as it set up its next season, when the infamous Dance of the Dragons–a civil war between the Targaryen family which ultimately decides who sits on the Iron Thronebegins. Much of the show’s drama came from rumors and miscommunication rather than senseless violence. And considering this is the family with the deadliest creatures in the Westeros, (dragons!) it’s a little surprising few people have died by dragon fire. The season finale, however, gave us a tease for Season 2, ensuring we’ll get way more dragon action soon.

Deposed from her rightful claim to the throne, Rhaenrya (Emma D’Arcy) begins to plan her response alongside Daemon (Matt Smith) and the various lords and knights who attend to her at Dragonstone. After a heated argument (resulting in Daemon unexpectedly choking Rhaenrya), Daemon disappears. The next we see him, he’s carrying a torch in the darkness, singing a song in High Valyrian–a song most likely invented for the show as a sort of lullaby. Daemon goes further into the darkness and we see a burst of flame; he’s trying to wrangle a dragon, and a large one at that.

There are a lot of dragons in the show. According to HBO, over the course of the series viewers will see 17 dragons. That’s a lot of names to keep up with, a lot of dragons to connect to their riders, and possibly some confusing aerial dragon fights we’ll have to dissect in the seasons to come. So, which dragon was Daemon singing to in the season finale?

Daemon was singing to Vermithor in the House of the Dragon Season 1 finale.

Vermithor is the second largest dragon the Targaryens own. The first is Vhagar, who notably mercy-killed his rider, Laena in Episode 6, “The Princess and the Queen.” A young Aemond then stole Vhagar, which resulted in the fight where he lost his eye.

Almost one hundred years old by the time of the Dance of the Dragons, Vermithor’s first rider was King Jaehaerys Targaryen I. Since Jaehaerys’ death, Vermithor remained riderless and lived at Dragonstone.

Considering dragons are the best chance Rhaenrya has to reclaim the Iron Throne, Vermithor will be a formidable opponent for say, Vhagar, when war finally begins and the Targaryen family starts to draw blood (although Aemond already drew first blood in the finale when Vhagar killed Lucerys).

We won’t be able to see any dragon WWE until Season 2, which we may not see until 2024.
