240 dead in Nepal floods and landslides; authorities issue fresh rainfall alert

Nepal has issued a fresh alert for heavy rainfall, warning of increased risks following days of devastating floods and landslides that have claimed more than 240 lives across the country.

The government has urged disaster management authorities to remain on high alert as forecasters predict further downpours in Koshi and Bagmati provinces, as well as the Kathmandu Valley, through Thursday.

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak emphasised the urgency of the situation, instructing the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), local governments, and security agencies to prepare for potential disasters.

“I have directed chief district officers and security agency heads in disaster-prone areas to stay vigilant,” Lekhak said.

The alert comes after Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology flagged potential dangers in regions already battered by relentless rains. Large portions of eastern and central Nepal have been submerged since Friday, and the risk of further damage remains high as more rainfall is expected.

Authorities are continuing extensive rescue operations. According to Home Ministry spokesperson Rishiram Tiwari, over 13,000 people have been evacuated from affected areas so far. The disaster, which began last Thursday, has displaced thousands and left major highways and roads damaged, prompting warnings to travellers.

The government has deployed more than 20,000 security personnel, including troops from the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police, to assist with search and rescue efforts.
