Because black can be unforgiving if you’re not meticulous, Stone says to “use a tiny concealer brush dipped in nail polish remover if you’ve painted outside the lines at all.” This takes the pressure off trying to paint a perfect 10 every time, especially on your nondominant hand.
And always use a cuticle oil with a patent leather mani because the high-shine finish on your nails will call attention to cuticles that are in less than stellar shape. Olive & June makes one of our faves because of its handy sponge applicator.
What nail shape does this look work best on?
“This look honestly works great on any shape and length, so it’s all going to depend on your personal style,” says Stone. Park, on the other hand, loves an almond or pointy oval shape, saying they’re “absolutely perfect for this sexy patent leather look.” But she’s a fan of extra-short, extra-square black nails too. “The contrast of extra-sharp square edges would complete the grungy patent leather vibe,” she says.
What nail polishes work for patent leather nails?
Deep blacks are always going to look great, but you can also try almost-black shades like dark browns, purples, greens, and blues. It’s fun to mix and match with black on your hands or feet and then the not-quite-black shade on the other. We like Undn Laqr Cooper’s Color for a take on a purplish black.
For a true shiny black, though, try OPI Black Onyx, Gucci Glossy Nail Polish Black Crystal, or Nails Inc. Gel Nail Polish Black Taxi. Ready to kick it up a notch? Go for a black shimmer or shade shifting shade like CND Vinylux Dark Diamonds or Orly Metamorphosis.
