The 574 Core is the quintessential New Balance sneaker—clean, versatile, and timeless. Originally designed as a performance running shoe in the late ’80s, it’s evolved into one of the most recognizable lifestyle sneakers around. With its mix of suede and mesh materials and a classic silhouette, it’s a go-to for anyone who wants a reliable, stylish shoe they can dress up or down.
Don’t expect max-cushioned support or cutting-edge tech here—this shoe shines in casual environments. Its EVA foam midsole and ENCAP cushioning provide just enough comfort for long days on your feet, whether you’re city-walking, grabbing coffee, or heading into the office. While it may not be your pick for workouts or high-impact movement, it’s an ideal everyday companion that nails that effortless “cool and comfy” balance.

If you’re clocking serious steps daily—or just want plush, underfoot comfort—the 1080 v14 should be at the top of your list. This is New Balance’s flagship running shoe, but its soft Fresh Foam X midsole and rocker design make it just as valuable for long walks and recovery days. It’s also been awarded the Seal of Acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), which gives it even more credibility as a go-to comfort pick.
The newest version features a triple jacquard mesh upper that improves breathability in key zones while maintaining the structured fit. Combined with a lower 6mm heel-to-toe drop and a smooth rocker profile, each step feels stable, cushioned, and natural. It’s not the lightest or most responsive shoe in the lineup, but for logging high mileage on your feet, the 1080v14 gets the job done comfortably and consistently.

The 880v15 is New Balance’s no-nonsense workhorse—reliable, durable, and built for balance. While it’s technically a running shoe, it’s a strong contender for everyday walkers who want a little more structure and support than what’s offered in softer models like the 1080v14. The dual-layer midsole offers a firmer feel, making it a better option for those who prefer a stable, grounded ride.
The 880v15 also features a wider toe box for better natural toe splay and an engineered mesh upper that delivers both breathability and a secure hold. It’s a great in-between shoe—not too plush, not too stiff—making it a versatile pick for those who want to walk, train, or even do some light jogging without switching pairs. If the 1080 feels too soft, this is your next best bet.

If you want a sleek, low-profile sneaker that balances style and function, the Arishi v4 delivers. It’s the kind of shoe you can wear from morning errands to casual nights out without thinking twice. While it’s not designed for heavy training or high mileage, it shines as a comfortable, affordable option for walking, commuting, and everyday wear.
This version of the Arishi features a Fresh Foam midsole for soft cushioning, a durable rubber outsole for traction, and a mesh upper with suede and knit accents for a slightly more elevated look. It’s available in three width options, which helps it fit a wider range of feet. Think of it as your stylish daily driver—light, breathable, and easy to match with just about anything.

For those who prefer their steps off the beaten path, the Hierro v9 is built to handle dirt, gravel, roots, rocks—you name it. Designed with trail-specific features, this shoe delivers a stable, well-cushioned ride whether you’re hiking in a national park or walking through uneven terrain at your local preserve.
The Vibram Megagrip outsole with 6mm lugs gives serious traction, and the Fresh Foam X midsole provides a cushioned landing without feeling overly soft or mushy. A gusseted tongue and reinforced toe cap help keep debris out and your feet protected from rough elements. While the Hierro is bulkier than a city sneaker, it’s a dependable option when you need durability, protection, and underfoot comfort that lasts for miles.

Designed specifically for walking, the FuelCell Walker Elite stands out as one of New Balance’s few purpose-built walking shoes that actually feels athletic. It’s equipped with the brand’s high-rebound FuelCell midsole, which delivers a bit more energy return compared to traditional walking shoe foams. That makes this pair a great pick for brisk walkers, commuters, or anyone logging serious step counts day after day.
The Walker Elite features a supportive Stability Plane, a midfoot cage for added lockdown, and Walking Strike Path technology that helps guide your gait from heel to toe. While it’s not quite as plush as other Fresh Foam options, its responsiveness and locked-in feel make it ideal for those who want structure and propulsion over softness.

If you’re looking for that “walking on clouds” feeling, the Fresh Foam X More v6 is the plushest shoe in New Balance’s lineup—and it shows. This model is all about softness and support underfoot, making it ideal for long days on your feet, city sightseeing, or recovery walks when you need your legs to catch a break.
Compared to the v5, this version has a slightly firmer feel (in a good way) and a refined engineered mesh upper that fits better and breathes more effectively. The rocker-shaped sole helps keep your stride smooth and consistent, even with all that cushioning underfoot. While the More v6 might feel too chunky for minimalists or style-first wearers, it’s hard to beat when comfort is your top priority.

Are Running Shoes Good For Walking?
This is a common question I get from my clients and friends—and generally the answer is yes. However, there may be certain running shoes that may not be the best for walking. There are running shoes that are geared for performance such as racing shoes, max cushion shoes, or even minimalistic running shoes.
If you are looking for a versatile option, I would suggest going for a daily trainer that is designed to be durable to handle a lot of steps while also offering a decent amount of cushion. Getting a “super shoe” or plated shoe to walk and occasionally run in because it looks sporty could be costly and quite simply—unnecessary.
