For centuries, fashion has been used as a tool for self-expression. When it comes to haute couture, however, textile design crosses over into high art. Everyone has to wear clothes, whether commoner or celebrity, but as this year’s Paris Haute Couture Week kicks off, the world’s most fashion-savvy stars are flocking to the City of Light to don their most avant-garde looks and find inspiration on the runway from the front row, getting up close and personal with the meticulously crafted, high-concept fashion.
The week began Sunday evening with the ultra-elegant Le Bal d’Été at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, thanks to the event’s artistic director, Sofia Coppola, who filled the space with flowers, fresh fruit, and fashion. Stars like Kirsten Dunst, Penélope Cruz, and Keira Knightley showed up for the stylish affair the day before Couture Week began in earnest on Monday. If there’s a better way to kick off a whirlwind schedule of the highest of high fashion and craftsmanship than Cardi B in a sculptural Schiaparelli gown, accessorized with opera gloves and a live crow, well, we don’t even want to hear about it.
